Chiropractic Care

The chiropractic adjustment restores “joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile – or restricted in their movement – as a result of a tissue injury… injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the sufferer. Adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal.”

Misalignment of your spine and poor health

No part of your body escapes the dominance of your nervous system. Improper function of the spine due to slight misalignments—called subluxations—can cause poor health or function, even in areas far removed from the spine and spinal cord itself.

Misalignments can also reduce the ability of your body to adapt to its ever-changing environment. Even the slightest malfunction of your spine may alter the regular transmission of nerve impulses, preventing that portion of your body from responding optimally.

Eight out of ten Canadians will experience back pain at some point in their life, and at least one third of people in Ontario will have back pain at any given time.

The body’s information highway – your nervous system – is protected by the spine. The nervous system travels out between the vertebrae or joints of the spine to carry messages from the brain to every corner of your body. Stress and strain on the vertebrae can put pressure on the nerves in the affected area. That is why a problem with your spine can have far-reaching effects causing symptoms such as arm or leg pain.

Natural health care without drugs or surgery

Chiropractic is a natural form of health care that uses spinal adjustments to correct these misalignments and restore proper function to the nervous system, helping your body to heal naturally. Chiropractic doesn’t use drugs or surgery. Rather, a chiropractic spinal adjustment—the application of a precise force to a specific part of the spinal segment—corrects the misalignment, permitting normal nerve transmission and assisting your body to recuperate on its own.

Active Release Therapy (ART)

What is Active Release Techniques (ART) to Individuals, Athletes, and Patients?

ART is a patented, state of the art soft tissue treatment system.  ART is a movement based massage technique that identifies and fixes problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves.

Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.

How do overuse conditions occur?

Over-used muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways:

  • acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc)
  • accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
  • not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia)

Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendonitis, and nerves can become trapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.

What is an ART treatment like?

Every ART session is actually a combination of examination and treatment. The ART provider uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.

These treatment protocols – over 500 specific moves – are unique to ART. They allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. ART is not a cookie-cutter approach.

What is the history of Active Release Techniques?

ART has been developed, refined, and patented by P. Michael Leahy, DC, CCSP. Dr. Leahy noticed that his patients’ symptoms seemed to be related to changes in their soft tissue that could be felt by hand. By observing how muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves responded to different types of work, Dr. Leahy was able to consistently resolve over 90% of his patients’ problems. He now teaches and certifies health care providers all over the world to use ART.

Dr Pelino has been an instructor of ART internationally for over 20 years and was first to bring it to Canada in 1991

Stress Release Method (SRM)

What is the Stress Relief Method?

The Stress Relief Method (SRM) was developed and is solely provided by Dr. James E. Kiernan after decades of research and experience in alternative medicine. Stress Relief Method (SRM) completely changes the way you feel right now and years into the future by providing two powerful applications to achieve and maintain optimal health. Combining both methods below can drastically improve and even eliminate some of the most severe symptoms of pain and stress.

SRM has launched the SRM Self-Applied Trainer Program for health and wellness professionals to become certified in the Self-Applied. They may then perform this method with clients or patients and will recognize a surge in satisfaction, results, and retention.

Its newest program, SRM Strength and Stretch, will launch soon to address the biggest obstacles to a healthy body: STRESS and tightness. This program combines strength training with the power of the patent pending SRM Self-Applied stretches. The combination of the two ensures that the strength training provides positive benefits to the unTwisted body.

SRM Physician-Applied

an 8-move, 15 minute standardized manual therapy performed by a certified practitioner that addresses and treats the underlying causes of pain and stress throughout the entire body.

SRM Self-Applied

an 11-move, 10-minute self-treatment technique that provides the same powerful benefits of manual therapy: eliminate stress, reduce pain, and achieve a healthy balance for better workouts. This is for anyone who considers health a priority and it is an ideal daily regime for staying at your best

Who can Benefit from the Stress Relief Method?

The SRM is really for everyone. Why? Nearly every one of the thousands of patients Dr. Kiernan has seen at his clinic has been in what he calls, THE TWIST. Everyone from stressed professionals to serious athletes to aging adults in pain find themselves in this universal, but unhealthy physical and mental state.

What is the TWIST?

The Twist is exactly what it sounds like—the physical and mental effects of continuous, unreleased stress over time. Whether physical, mental, or a combination of both, these stressors can, over time, cause or worsen chronic pain.

Physically, The Twist refers to an overall tightening of the right side of the body, with a corresponding lengthening on the left—often as a response to unmanaged mental or emotional stress. This “twisting” sets off a chain reaction, dragging nerves, blood vessels, ligaments, muscles, and bones out of place.

Manual therapy is often focused on “realigning” the parts of the body that have moved out of place—but without targeting the root stressors, The Twist will continue to reoccur.

What is an SRM Physician-Applied Treatment Like?

The SRM Physician-Applied treatment can be thought of as a hybrid between several alternative therapies, but with Dr. Kiernan’ proprietary moves. Some professionals in the field have likened it to receiving “10 powerful massages at once”. Others describe post treatment effects as, Euphoric”, “less pain”, “no more stress”, “more energy”, “better sleep”, and the list goes on.

“SRM was immediate and permanent in regard to my pain and the stress that kept coming back. It made no sense at first how this could be so powerful. The method gave me more than relief as I began to think about all stressors differently. I am able to barely remember that I suffered pain every day for at least 2 years. Even after the first few sessions when I already felt great, I would travel to New York City, to be treated by Dr. Kiernan as I needed to develop more of my own control over pain and stress. For a time, I was actually embarrassed that I had pain when my job was in fact to help others with theirs. I had to learn to let that go too.

During the treatment I am so totally non-distracted by anything on my mind. This sort of freedom and the breathing actually allows me to feel the relaxation, the letting go both as a relaxed area in the brain and body. The sense that this is right at least for me is both hopeful and empowering even if for during the treatment. But it lingers and for quite a long while. I also rank very highly in this regard how straight forward and direct and simple Dr. Kiernan provides his method. He gets to it and therefore I am sooner into the place where healing and letting go happens. And I did it.”

I believe I have seen, heard about and learned many things, from my countless travels to the arctic and throughout an international experience and I find SRM different, humble and effective. Rather surprising.” – Dr. Joe Pelino

OTZ Therapy

One-To-Zero, or OTZ Tension Adjustment is a proven, non-surgical method of diagnosing and successfully treating Frozen Shoulder Syndrome (FSS). The OTZ examination is designed to detect specific neurological weaknesses or deficits that must be addressed in order to restore proper function to the shoulder.

OTZ Tension Therapy

OTZ, standing for “One To Zero”  is a spinal adjustment technique used in the correction of frozen shoulder syndrome.  Dr. Joe Pelino is one of a limited few in Canada who can administer this new and revolutionary therapy for frozen shoulder.

Doctors of Chiropractic who use the OTZ treatment, such as Dr. Joe Pelino, follow a unique and complex series of adjustments to the head and upper neck. These treatments must be performed in a specific order, as each adjustment targets a precise location of the spine. Recovery is slightly different for every patient, but there is a common connection between FSS and the spinal accessory nerve, where patients experience immediate improvement after the adjustments are made.

The OTZ Tension Adjustment, combined with Active Release Techniques and specific rehabilitative therapies, is the fastest path to full resolution.

History of OTZ

The first One To Zero (OTZ) Tension Adjustment was performed by Dr. Francis X. Murphy in the spring of 2007. His patient had shown no signs of a response to any and all previous therapies for her Frozen Shoulder Syndrome (FSS). In fact, she was scheduled for surgical intervention. After detailed research into the multiple theories as to why FSS develops, Dr. Murphy formulated his own hypothesis, and with his patient’s trust, put it to the test.

Does the OTZ Tension Adjustment hurt?

Most patients report a comfortable experience during the procedure; more severe cases may be slightly uncomfortable, but are still well tolerated. How long does it take to complete treatment? There is no simple answer to this question. The majority of patients show positive results after just a few visits, with many reporting an immediate positive reaction. The One to Zero Tension adjustment, when followed by Active Release Techniques and specific rehabilitative therapies, can be the fastest and most cost effective path to full resolution.

Dr. Pelino works with all of his patients to establish a proper treatment plan that ensures that the condition is corrected completely.

What to expect from an OTZ Tension Adjustment

Immediately following the OTZ Tension adjustment, the patient experienced an 80% reduction in pain and was able to move her previously immobile shoulder, into 180° abduction. This seemingly miraculous occurrence led Dr. Murphy to the discovery of the HMD or Hatcher-Murphy Disorder, named after the patient and doctor that discovered it.

The HMD is theorized to be a subluxation of the atlanto-occipital joint causing tethering and resulting ischemia of the Cranial Nerve XI, which in turn causes dysfunction of the trapezius muscle. The trapezius muscle is fundamental for the complete motion of the shoulder complex.

People potentially in need of this type of adjustment do not have to have the full-blown presentation of FSS but may have varying degrees of shoulder impingement as well as other vague neurological complaints related to compromising the function of this part of the nervous
